Fabric is one of the most versatile elements in any home. It can make you feel warm or cool, cosy or refreshed. It’s also one of the easiest things to change each season to create a whole new mood.
When the sun begins to shine and the trees come into bud, our senses quickly become more attuned to the natural world around us. Decorating with nature-inspired colours, patterns and materials suddenly seems more important than ever. We’ve tapped into these instincts with our new spring fabrics.
Natural fibres such as linen capture spring’s mood of health and vitality. Happily, they’re also designed to last well beyond this season. Not for nothing did the Romans name the flax plant ‘Linum usitatissimum’: the linen woven from it is indeed ‘most useful’. The material gets softer and lovelier as it ages. It feels cool as the mercury rises, but also keeps us warm in winter. Soft patterns on unbleached linens suit everything from hardworking sofas to scatter cushions. This season’s understated prints are also complemented by our new Finian plain and pure linen in Sage.
Linen with velvet. Florals with stripes. Patterns with plains. Combining different fabric weights and textures creates a room with warmth and spirit. Team a plain velvet sofa with a pair of printed linen armchairs. Or create easy pattern mixes with layers of cushions. Our romantic Emma cabbage-rose print and Jack stripe are a classic country-house pairing, brought up to date with a soft, feathered edge to the stripe.
Beds, sofas and armchairs are usually the largest pieces of furniture in a room, so inevitably they make a big impact. It’s important to be able to choose upholstery fabric that you really love and that coordinates with other soft furnishings, which is why our furniture comes in dozens of different fabric options; we call this our Neptune Tailored service. In a bedroom, why not try a patterned headboard? It’s an original way to add decoration and you can play it up or down with your choice of bedding.
Focus On Windows
A wide window ledge in a sunny spot is a gift not to be overlooked. Have a large cushion made to fit the ledge and add a few smaller ones so you can sit back and enjoy the view. Perhaps with a good book and a long drink. It’s what lazy spring days are made for.
Fabrics By The Metre
Most of our fabrics are sold by the metre so you can have them made up into anything you like. Transform a tired dining chair with a new slip cover, or treat an antique armchair to new upholstery. We’ll soon be launching our new curtain and Roman blind service, too. For spring, try a linen blind: the material filters the light beautifully, throwing a pretty pattern into sharp focus. You could even have curtains made for a set of French doors – what’s more uplifting than a delicate fabric wafting in a warm breeze?
